- How DO you RP?

- My experiences of this kind of site have been pretty limited I'm afraid...so how do you RP exactly? Does one person just outline what goes in their head and the other person follow, or is it usually an exact sharing of ideas? Is it told as a story or as if it's happening now? Does it take place in past, present or future tense? Who initiates? How do you initiate?

- It varies greatly from person to person, you and your parter just have to figure out what works for the both of you. Unforunately it's hard to find a good roleplaying partner. :(

I does vary from person to person. It'll genrally start off with at least one person having an idea of wht they want to RP about. Say 'Do you fancy RPing mad scientist and scared virginal grad student?' then the other might say that this does appeal to them but they prefer their grad students to be experianced and so on until everyone agrees on the basics. I've never been in an RP where the whole story is outlined because part of the fun is taking a starting idea and then running with it to see where it heads. That said, you can tell when someone wants it to head in a general direction and if it was theit idea in the first place I think it'd be pretty rude to try and swerve it around and take it somewhere different. And some RPs I've done have been me and a guy matching wits to see who can outplan and manouver who in the context of the RP, which is pretty fun.
As for the actual style of the storytelling, that varies again. Some people will say 'I am doing such and such to you' as if it is happening right now. Some people say 'I would do such and such' though that is really more for cybering than RP. I'm a big fan for using the /me command to outline what is happening as in 'sweetsub looks down to her feet and sees your tentacles approaching' and leaving the reply function just for speech as in 'sweetsub: OMG! Tentacles!' but it's whatever works. I'm not a big fan of the past tense, as that gives one person a lot more control over the story than the other. Unless that works for you.
Hope that was helpful and not too tl;dr
